Short answer: no. PUBG Mobile Lite isn’t coming back to India, and Krafton has never announced a return. The game still runs in other countries, but its India listing is gone and has stayed gone since 2020.
There’s a real replacement on the way though, and it isn’t the one most people expect. Here’s the honest picture, checked against the official store listings rather than repeated from other sites.
What actually happened to PUBG Mobile Lite in India
In late 2020 the Indian government blocked a large list of apps, and PUBG Mobile and PUBG Mobile Lite were both part of it. Servers stopped serving Indian players and both listings were pulled from the India Play Store.
PUBG Mobile eventually got an India-specific replacement: Battlegrounds Mobile India, or BGMI, published by Krafton and built to satisfy Indian data rules. PUBG Mobile Lite never got that treatment. There was no Lite equivalent of BGMI, and there still isn’t one today. That’s the gap people keep searching about.
Is PUBG Mobile Lite still alive anywhere?
We mapped where it still works
Rather than take anyone else’s word for it, we queried the store listings directly on 2 September 2026. Two results, both useful.
It’s live on Google Play in 18 of the 19 countries we tested. United States, United Kingdom, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brazil, Mexico, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, South Africa, Turkey, Russia and Germany all return a working listing. India is the only one that returns a 404.
That’s worth sitting with. The game isn’t winding down globally and it isn’t being retired. It runs normally almost everywhere and is blocked in exactly one market, which happens to be yours.
The second result surprised us: there’s no iOS version at all. We checked the App Store in eleven countries for the PUBG Mobile Lite bundle and every one came back empty. PUBG Mobile Lite has always been Android only. If you remember playing a lighter build on an iPhone, that was regular PUBG Mobile.
So an Indian iPhone owner has never had a Lite option, and still doesn’t. BGMI Lite is Android only too, at least for now. We checked the India App Store for it and found no listing there either.
Yes. This surprises people, because a lot of posts claim the game shut down entirely. It didn’t.
Checked directly against Google Play: the PUBG Mobile Lite listing loads normally on the store outside India, and returns a 404 not found on the India store. So the game exists, it’s just not published for India.
The confusion usually comes from PUBG Lite for PC, a different product, which Krafton did shut down worldwide back in 2021. Two separate things, similar names, endlessly mixed up.
What India is getting instead: BGMI Lite
This is the part worth knowing. Krafton has announced BGMI Lite, a lighter build of Battlegrounds Mobile India made for lower-end phones and smaller data plans. It’s the India-specific answer to the same problem PUBG Mobile Lite solved.
Pre-registration is already open on Google Play, free, and it takes one tap: pre-register for BGMI Lite. Google Play then installs it for you on launch day.
Krafton has committed to a launch by the end of 2026 without naming an exact day. For the full detail see our BGMI Lite pre-registration guide and the BGMI Lite release date page.
Can you use a VPN or an APK to play it in India?
Technically some people do. It’s a bad idea, and here’s the honest reasoning rather than a scare line.
- APK sites are the main malware route for this game. Because there’s no legitimate India download, every site offering one is offering something else.
- VPN play breaks the game anyway. Added latency in a battle royale means losing fights you should win.
- Account risk is real. Third-party clients and region spoofing are exactly what anti-cheat systems flag, and a ban follows the account, not the app.
Pre-registering for BGMI Lite costs nothing and carries none of that risk. It’s simply the better move.
BGMI Lite vs PUBG Mobile Lite: what changes for you
| PUBG Mobile Lite | BGMI Lite | |
|---|---|---|
| Available in India | No, delisted | Coming, pre-registration open |
| Publisher for India | None | Krafton |
| Status | Live outside India | Announced, not launched |
| Launch window | Not returning | By end of 2026 |
Why has Krafton not just brought it back?
Krafton hasn’t given a public reason, so anything here’s reading the situation rather than quoting them. But the shape of it’s fairly clear.
Relaunching a blocked title in India means rebuilding it for local data rules, local hosting, and a separate publishing setup. Krafton did that once already, for BGMI. Doing it a second time for a separate Lite client, splitting the same player base across two apps, makes little sense commercially.
Building a lighter version of BGMI instead gets the same players on lower-end phones, inside the app Krafton already operates in India. That’s what BGMI Lite is, and it explains why the wait for a PUBG Mobile Lite return has gone nowhere for years.
Frequently asked questions
Is PUBG Mobile Lite coming back to India?
No. There has been no official announcement of a return, and the India Play Store listing still returns a not-found error. BGMI Lite is the India replacement, and its pre-registration is open now.
PUBG Mobile Lite India me kab aayega?
Iska koi official date nahi hai, kyunki Krafton ne wapas laane ka koi plan announce nahi kiya. India ke liye BGMI Lite aa raha hai, aur uski pre-registration abhi open hai.
PUBG Mobile Lite kab unban hoga?
No unban date exists because this isn’t a temporary suspension waiting to lift. The app was delisted for India and Krafton moved to a separate India title instead.
Is PUBG Mobile Lite shut down completely?
No. It still runs outside India. The worldwide shutdown people remember was PUBG Lite for PC in 2021, which is a different product.
Can I still download the PUBG Mobile Lite APK in India?
There’s no legitimate India download. Any site offering one isn’t giving you the official game, and installing it risks malware and an account ban.
Is BGMI Lite the same as PUBG Mobile Lite?
No. They’re separate games from the same idea. BGMI Lite is Krafton India’s lighter build of BGMI, and it’s the one actually coming to India.
What to do right now
If you came here hoping for a PUBG Mobile Lite return date, the useful move is to stop waiting on that and get in line for the game that is actually coming.
- Pre-register for BGMI Lite on Google Play. Free, one tap, and it auto-installs on launch day.
- Skip any APK or VPN workaround. There’s no legitimate India build of PUBG Mobile Lite to find.
- Check the BGMI Lite release date page, which we update whenever Krafton confirms something new.
We’ll update this page if Krafton ever announces a PUBG Mobile Lite return for India. As of today there’s nothing to report, and any site giving you a specific comeback date is guessing.
